[00:01] REENA JADHAV: On to chapter 10 which is the plant powered GI tract and kidney systems. It’s interesting our poor kidneys don’t get a lot of love or attention and you talked about the kidneys in this book so just share a little bit more about how does plant powered diet help with the GI tract and more importantly with the kidney.
[00:18] DR. JOEL KAHN: Whether it’s directly or indirectly. Indirectly if a plant based diet I write about lowers your risk of diabetes or reverse your diabetes. Diabetes is if that number one number two cause of and stage in this blood pressure. If you are able to lose weight, lower your blood pressure of a plant based diet blood pressure is the number one or number two cause and stage getting kidney disease. That will benefit you and then directly we know that it is taxing for the kidneys to manage protein there may be a different way that plant protein is handled by the kidney verses animal protein. And there again isn’t all the science we need but there’s some isolated case reports and such that they’re various kidney disease is not all but various kidney disease do respond to a plant diet and again maybe it’s profoundly through blood sugar, inflammation and blood pressure pathways, but you certainly are hurting your kidneys when you shift your bean stew to bean stew/beef stew. And when you shift your burger from beef burger kinuwa to jail burger you are not hurting your kidneys you’re almost certainly favoring better health and better calories.
