1. How did you transition from being a board-certified psychiatrist to understanding that it’s not pills, it’s nutrition, lifestyle, and food that are critically important? What drove that change?
2. There are people who at the age of 99 are independent, biking everywhere and remembering everything. If we are not that strong mentally at 70, why? What can we do? How can we start catching signs of very early onset?
– Before Alzheimer’s disease, there’s early diagnosis like MCI, SCI.
– People generally know that they’re forgetting little details or finding difficulty in finding words.
– One of the early signs of hormonal decline is problems with memory and word finding.
– 1 out of 2 women will get Alzheimer’s disease.
– When women start to lose estrogen, the neurons start degenerating in her brain.
– In a case study, 100% of women who stopped their estrogen had a cognitive decline.
– Hormones are a major driver of cognition.
3. Taking Benadryl or antihistamine for 3 years or more was associated with a 54% higher dementia risk. Talk a little about that and what do you recommend to patients who are on Benadryl?
– Our body is flowing. If we take something that blocks our system, it will have downstream effects. For example, Statin.
4. Talk a little bit about what’s causing this inflammation. How do you go about finding the root cause of inflammation? How do you address it?
– “Leaky gut, leaky brain”; It starts in the gut
– Stress alone can affect the lining of the gut
– Self-healing starts in your diet
5. What do you recommend as the top three dietary changes to make sure that you’re quelling inflammation on a daily basis?
– Health declined in the 60’s during the start of processed food
– Get healthier snacks, Get Fresh fruits and vegetables
– Try to eat organic food and free-range meats
– Wheat is saturated with roundup which makes it toxic
– Standard American Diet (SAD) is very high in omega 6 fatty acids which is anti-inflammatory. Beef is very high in omega 6 fatty acids.
– Fat secretes its own inflammatory cytokines. People carrying this fat have high inflammation.
– Free range beef is high in omega 3 and low in omega 6.
– Detoxify
6. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy reversed the brain atrophy and major neurologic deficiency a child experienced. What have you seen with the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy with your patients in reversing dementia? What age does it work? Who does it work best for?
– Oxygen increases oxygenation in your tissues, brain, heart, and organs.
– Good for someone who’s someone having a stroke, since there’s nerve regeneration
7. What are the challenges that we face when we go on a vegan diet? What is the correlation between being vegan, depression and brain disorders?
– It’s not easy to do because it’s not our natural diet
– Sleep is a critical driver of brain health. When we sleep, our brain detoxifies. The toxins can be removed in our body when we sleep.
– 6 hours is not enough. Anyone who isn’t sleeping well should check if they have sleep apnea
– Toxins and infections is a huge driver of brain inflammation
