[00:01] DR. THOMAS O’BRYAN: So autoimmune diseases is when your immune system says, “We have got a problem here!” and the immune system is trying to fight something so where does that come from? Why does your immune system try to protect you and it is attacking your own tissue?
[00:22] REENA JADHAV: Hi, everyone, it’s Reena with Doctor Tom and we are going to answer that very important question that was left unanswered on the first step. So Doctor Tom why is our autoimmune system trying to protect us? What is going on?
[00:37] DR. THOMAS O’BRYAN: I am going to tell you two studies-two and then tie it into your question. The first one from the world wildlife fund came out about two and a half years ago in conjunction with two major universities and the way they do the stock indexes for investors-the mathematics that they do for that, they did the same type of mathematics looking at 17,000 different species of life on the planet-insects, birds, animals, mammals, fish and what they found out was that between 1970 and 2011, there has been an average across the board a 58% reduction in populations of all mammals, not mammals, all vertebrates’ species on the planet. Anything that has a spine insects, birds, fish, and mammals- 58% of everything is gone in 41 years gone now for birds it was 35% but for mammals living near fresh waters, it was 78%. 78% of the beavers are gone, the cougars, the muskrats they are gone- 78% of them in 41 years why? They are drinking the water and if you were drinking the water coming out of the streams by your home or from the river by your home, you get cancer quicker; you will be unable to reproduce just like the animals. All right! Now the second study. The second study was from 1974 to 2011 so almost the same time 37 years as opposed to 41 years. 37 years and it was a meta-analysis and what that means is they looked at a whole bunch of studies on the same topic. It was over 180 studies, and they looked at sperm count in healthy men not infertile men but healthy men, and in the last 37 years, there has been a 59% reduction in sperm count in healthy men. Scientists worry about the extinction of a species at 72%. We are at 59% in 37 years so take the first study 41 years- 58% of all the animals of all the vertebrate species 58% are gone, 78% of those near fresh water gone and then the second study, 59% reduction in sperm count in healthy men and at 72% you worry about the extinction of a species. Now the question is why is this happening? And so that now we get to why autoimmune disease happening-it is for the same reason and that is the amount of environmental chemicals that we are exposed to every day has never occurred before in the history of man. Never! Let me give you an example you go to a coffee shop, you get a coffee to go, you put a lid on it- the hot liquid, the steam from the liquid goes up to the underside of the lid, it condenses and drips back on to the coffee full of bisphenol. Bisphenol is a chemical that helps to mold plastic. You put the coffee cup up to your lips with the lid on it-the hot liquid hits the underside of the whole lid and tapers down into the opening full of bisphenol. Now what does bisphenol do? Bisphenol does all kinds of nasty things in your body but mainly it acts like a very powerful estrogen. In that, it binds anti-estrogen receptor sites and that is why autoimmune disease is much more common in women than in men. The average is 3 to 1 for some like thyroid it is 9 to 1 that is for every man there is nine women they get thyroid disease or immune disease because these estrogen like chemicals bind on to estrogen receptor sites and then the immune system sees this chemical bound on to your heart receptor sites- what is that I better fight that and immune system attacks that thing. It damages your tissue then your body has to get rid of the damaged tissue to make room for new cells and so you make antibodies to that tissue like your thyroid and then you have the circle going and you keep making antibodies to your thyroid in this example. The autoimmune diseases they are all just going through the roof in the last 40-50 years this is why. It is the amount of chemicals that we are exposed to everyday-the lipstick we use, the shampoo you know you read what is in the shampoo you have no idea what those chemicals means but you inhale that stuff. It gets in and goes right through your lungs then to your bloodstream or the acetone from nail polish and chemicals in nail polish is directly associated with developing the autoimmune disease systemic psoriasis. Therefore, we see this correlation of mercury I mean every tuna that you know except for one all tuna now except for one has mercury levels in it and this is just terrible because tuna is a great food for you but it has mercury now. And so we see this world of toxic chemicals and heavy metals that we are being exposed to and these things accumulate in our body. I used to make jokes about this old 20-25 years ago with my patients that I saw an article that in the embalming industry they use less embalming fluid now than they ever did before because our bodies are already preserved full of these toxic chemicals so they are using less embalming fluid.
[07:13] REENA JADHAV: That is so horrifying that you have to laugh at that but we are being embalmed alive and we wonder why our bodies are fighting so hard to protect us.
[07:24] DR. THOMAS O’BRYAN: That is right. You know this stuff is so overwhelming for people, that’s why I talk about my treat and there is two concepts: – one is my treat-be kind to yourself and the second is one just one. In the museum of science in Florence, there is a display it is a round marble stand with a glass dome. It is about this high and it is Galileo’s finger and if you are on the Amazon type in Galileo’s finger there is a couple of books about it. Galileo beguiled that all of his inventions could be on displays for all the posterity as long as they also display his finger. So I used that slide and took a picture of it, I used that slide talking to physicians all the time because doctors do not know all these stuff that I am telling you and I tell them the more technical aspects-they do not know this. I said look here is what it takes and the penology I use is I sat where you are hundreds of times in seminars over the last 35 years and if it is a good speaker, a good panel of speakers. I am furiously taking notes like some of you are in listening to these podcasts in these events you are taking and pages sometimes of notes and I take notes after notes after notes and I go back to the practice and on Monday morning. There is no time to implement any of it and everyone laughs it is only that is very true that is very true. So I came up with a philosophy if there is one thing just one thing that I take home from this weekend seminar, it stays with me in my practice for the rest of my career. Then the thousands of dollars that I spent to fly to this city, rent the hotel, pay for the conference, pay for the meals, and be out of my practice it was worth it if it is just one thing, I wish I could remember ten but if there is one for the rest of my career, it is worth it. So I used this one finger concept to say if you allocate one hour a week just one hour a week to learning a little more on this topic on autoimmunity for example. One hour a week to listen to this series maybe again and again just one hour a week. In 6 months you have got this down and at that point you are implementing some of the things for example you are not going to Starbucks to get your coffee without your mug and say fill it up please and then you are not using those plastic lids right? You will learn I mean why do you take your shoes off at the door when you walk in the house. That is a Buddhist thing. You were walking down the sidewalk to come home; your neighbors sprayed the sidewalks to kill the weeds yesterday now you got round up on your shoes. You walk in the house and on the carpet in your house with your shoes on now, there is round up on the carpet. Your little infant is crawling around on the carpet or your teenage daughter is doing her homework lying on the floor, now they get round up on their arms and their hands and it gets in their face and it gets in their body- the toxic chemicals.
[10:52] REENA JADHAV: And we wonder why everyone is sneezing and has so many allergies.
[10:56] DR. THOMAS O’BRYAN: That is right. That is why you leave your shoes at the door. Why does everyone need an air filtration system in their house? It was in the 1990s that the study started coming out in Mexico City: that every dog when the dogs passed if they did autopsy on the dog every dog had evidence of Alzheimer’s. Every dog and in the early to mid-2000s and late into the early 2008-2009, the studies started coming out because we came up with the blood test and the urine test to look at. Every child they checked in Mexico City has inflammation in their brain and evidence of early Alzheimer every child that they checked. It’s the air pollution it is so bad there that you breathe it in, it goes right through your lungs directly up to your brain triggering this inflammation in your brain. We know now there are five different types of Alzheimer and the most common type is inhalation Alzheimer. It is what you are inhaling every day that is, gasoline on the fire in your brain. You are pouring gasoline on the fire every day. If you live in a moldy house, if there is molds around, if you have got mold in your bathroom and you can see it, you throw gasoline on the fire of your brain every day and it may take 20 years or 30 years before you have got dementia but rest assured this is most likely happening.
[12:27] REENA JADHAV: You know what if my symptoms Doctor Tom had been brain fog you know in my 28 symptoms and so I had been desperately trying to figure out what the hell is wrong with me? What is creating my 28 symptoms so someone had said something about air and I said, “What? I live in this beautiful golf course community, I am surrounded by vineyards and olive trees, I live in heaven what are you talking about but okay I am going find out what kind they spray.” I reached out to local county offices send me what is being sprayed. With a little bit of a fuss they said, “You are not going to go do some great awful write about us?” I said, “No this is for me personally”. They sent me a list they bring me a spreadsheet and I took some time to google and figure out what the hell was being sprayed around and the conclusion I reached was that when I went for that beautiful walk or that run because I love running, the harder I run, the more sick I was becoming so the concept of Oh I am going to go out and breathe some beautiful clean air is no longer a reality today.
[13:30] DR. THOMAS O’BRYAN: And that is correct. If you want to know how bad it is take your car to the car wash. Go to a really nice car wash the one with a guy with a water bottle on their hip and they wipe. Drive home leave the car outside for four hours. Set your alarm for four hours then go outside and run your hands across the windshield- that is what you are breathing. You cannot see it, you cannot taste, you can’t feel it but that is what you are breathing 24/7 and that is the most common trigger for Alzheimer’s now it is inhalation Alzheimer. So I mean that is why one hour a week because the stuff is so overwhelming it is like I am just doing this with you right now and it is overwhelming to you but the goal here is to motivate you to embrace this concept, alright I will give this one hour a week this guy is making sense and if you get the book ‘The Autoimmune Fix’, you will get lots of these details and the little pearls in there of how to do this and what to do but you have to be really kind to yourself you have to be patient and kind and do not expect you are going to get well tomorrow because what has taken 30,40,50 years to develop is going to take you a year or two years to reverse.
[14:55] REENA JADHAV: And I have talked to so many friends who struggled with the concept of knowing the right thing to do and then actually doing it and do your concept of mantra I always say step one is just looking in the mirror every morning and saying, “I love you, I care for you, you are the most important thing in my life”, and it changes subconsciously how you treat your body the whole day. It will stop you from eating that French fry because the first thing in the morning you said to yourself was that you love yourself and you take care of yourself, you are going to protect yourself and that is not what you are doing when you are eating that MacDonald’s fries. It makes it easier right? So that was one of the tricks that I did and Luiz hey it is not my own trek. Everything I did was learned from some brilliant genius like yourself.
[15:43] DR. THOMAS O’BRYAN: I would suggest one tweak to that because I think the majority of people cannot look in the mirror and say I love you and you were not able to do that the first time you read about it or you were told about it. So it is just like everything else and the concept is ‘base hit when the ball game’ have home runs base hit when the ball game so if you look in the mirror in the morning and you are admiring oh my hair, I have got this thing here, your mind is going to do that because that is the way you were programmed. You say you know what I am going to take a little bit of care today of me than I did yesterday just a little bit better and if you hit from that base hit concept it is not so challenging because I think for me my mind says Oh I love you more than anybody else. Most people can’t do that.
[16:40] REENA JADHAV: You are absolutely right and that is one of the hardest things you will do because we take ourselves for granted and not until you lost everything around your health do you understand how invaluable it is what your body is doing for you. Your body’s job is keeping you strong and healthy and going we just take that for granted. Do your point you do not give it the right fuel, we do not give it the right sleep you are right we take better care of our cars because hey that might be leased, that might be actually returned or acting funny for that.
[17:12] DR. THOMAS O’BRYAN: Well you are too expensive right.
[17:13] REENA JADHAV: You are too expensive. I do not take care of my car because I pay a lot of money and because we did not pay for those in our body, we do not realize that it is more precious than anything else you own at this point and so it really deserves to be taken better care of. So my three loving yourself is a great start but that step one in the next video the third in the series we are going to talk about what specific things you can start to do. So do not forget to keep an eye out and watch the third video in our series. Thanks for watching.
